Fall Session Courses 2023
This course is the introductory course for every certificate program.
This unique eight week course will be broadcast live on Monday afternoons, but many students choose to watch the recordings of the classes if they cannot attend them live.
In this course students will be introduced to the topics that are studied by professional parapsychologists. Topics will include an overview of the phenomena (Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Precognition, Psychokinesis, and Survival Issues), history, research methodologies and researchers that make up the vibrant field of scientific parapsychology. The course textbook is Introduction to Parapsychology, 5th edition by Harvey Irwin and Caroline Watt. Besides the weekly class broadcasts, there is an online discussion forum for students to share their ideas, answer questions about the lectures, and communicate with the instructors.
Students who choose to be graded in this course will receive letter grades based on their participation in the weekly discussion forums, and their scores on two multiple choice/short answer essay tests given in weeks 4 and week 8. Students who complete this course with a passing grade will receive a certificate of completion from the Rhine Education Center.
This course is included in the Professional Field Investigations certificate and the Paranormal Investigations certificate programs.
This course is a deeper exploration of the topics covered in the Field Investigations course.
See note below for those wanting to take the course without a grade.
In this course, students will explore the topics of field investigations more deeply, including methods related to specific models of paranormal phenomena from a scientific perspective of a parapsychologist. In addition, this course will discuss the history of paranormal field research, provide details on dealing with clients and finding resolutions during investigations, discuss issues related to “public haunts” vs. private home cases, and provide more complex methods for exploring the evidence and analyzing data to reach a conclusion. Technology used in investigations* will be reviewed along with EVPs, and psychic, mediums, and other sensitives. The technology will be evaluated at a basic level for best use in both private homes and public site investigations.
Finally, this course will examine the psychology of perception and interpretation of activity and how non-paranormal explanations can apply in investigative circumstances. Parapsychology laboratory findings will be integrated into the course materials to explore how the laboratory studies apply to field investigations.
Students who are taking this course for a grade are required to have taken the Field Investigations course from the Rhine, or taken the Ghost Hunting course from HCH, or established yourself as a knowledgeable student of parapsychology with the instructor, or passed a quiz on field investigations (provided by Loyd Auerbach). If you’re not taking the course for a grade, there are no prerequisites, though the Introduction to Parapsychology course and the Field Investigations course are both recommended.
This 8 week academic course will explore a different scientific study in parapsychology each week. Students will be asked to read a scientific paper to prepare for each week, and the class will examine the purpose of the study, the methodology presented, the analysis technique, and the significance of the study to the field of parapsychology. Each week, the studies will be reviewed in class, and students will be asked to discuss specific topics in the courseroom to help provide additional insight into the study.
Studies will include Zener card research done at the Duke Parapsychology Lab, the Ganzfeld technique, studies of Remote Viewing, micro-PK experiments from the PEAR Lab, studies of healing, and poltergeists, among others.
The special issues related to research in parapsychology will be included in this course, and students will have an opportunity to discuss these issues and creatively provide ways to address these issues.
It is strongly recommended that students taking this course have a background in Research Methods or have taken a course in Research Methods for parapsychology.
This course is included in the Professional Field Investigations certificate and the Paranormal Investigations certificate programs.
Learn about the paranormal through the study of investigations and reports of apparitions, hauntings, and poltergeists.
This 8-week course will take a deep look at a hand-picked group of professional investigations of apparitions, hauntings, and poltergeists, as well as significant surveys of similar experiences. Included will be key cases (like the Seaford Poltergeist case which produced the RSPK model), important investigative methods, and a discussion of two major surveys of spontaneous psi experiences and what they say about psi in general.
Instructor Loyd Auerbach will present his own cases with details, video shot on site, and insights that have not made it into published reports or television interviews. Students will have the opportunity to ask deeper questions about Auerbach’s cases.
How does Nature reveal the divine, the miraculous, and mystical, and what are the similarities between cultures that give us profound insight into its power?
This 4-week survey course will review paramount movements through the ages to discover how nature has enabled humans to connect with the deeper consciousness of all living things. Students will explore how the people of the world share a reverence for nature, considering it to be divine, sacred, or populated by spiritual beings, and how ancient beliefs and present-day movements are influencing attempts to use the powerful forces of Nature to conjure the extraordinary and the unimaginable.
As we critically examine a multitude of nature-based practices, such as the belief in supernatural beings and supernatural forces, we will introduce concepts used in ancient and modern movements such as animism, alchemy, astrology, biodynamics, bioenergetics, druidry, hermeticism, geomagnetism, green magic, qigong, natural healing, nature spirituality, mythology, polytheism, shamanism, Shintoism, tribal nature-based religions, wiccan, etc. This journey will enable students to gain an introduction and deeper appreciation of our connection to nature and how it governs our own psychic and conscious development, nurturing our connection to nature's more ethereal realms.
This 4-week online introduction to remote viewing (RV) will discuss RV’s origins and history, scientific protocols, methodologies, applications, success stories and failures, explanatory theories, skeptical critiques, and much more, including brief instruction to the RV process and an opportunity to perform your own remote viewing session during the course of instruction. The controversy surrounding teaching of remote viewing will be discussed, and you will be introduced to the roles played in remote viewing by some of the most significant personalities in the field, including such luminaries as Ingo Swann, Hal Puthoff, Russell Targ, Joseph McMoneagle, Ed May, and others.
Instructor Paul H. Smith, Ph.D. was for seven years a member of Project Star Gate, the US government remote viewing program, working as an operational remote viewer, trainer, and the program’s official historian. He still actively teaches remote viewing in its various aspects, is on the Board of Directors of the Rhine Research Center, and is a previous president of IRVA, the International Remote Viewing Association.

Winter Session Courses 2024
This course is included in the Professional Field Investigations certificate and the Paranormal Investigations certificate programs.
The Field Investigations course is designed as an overview to introduce students to the methodologies of parapsychologists specifically with regard to the spontaneous occurrence of psychic experiences as they occur outside laboratory settings, with a main focus on cases of reported Apparitions, Hauntings and Poltergeists. Attendees will gain an understanding of the very basic skills and needed for investigation of ghosts, poltergeists, haunted places and related psychic experiences.
The class will include:
This 8 week course is an expansion of a previous 4 week courses discussing artists, artistic movements, and artisitics activities.
It is designed for anyone who wishes to gain a deeper understanding of how art has given us a series of clues about psi and human experience. We will review critical artworks going back to ancient times and we will wander across the art history timeline to present for illumination.
Who were these renegade artists who saw the creative potential of expressing what Psi meant to them, and who tried to capture the miraculous and mystical through various art media and across various cultural contexts? We will explore how artists have used art to convey the extraordinary, the unimaginable.
As we critically examine various art and art forms, the biography of a few selected artists will be placed within the framework of their time and their own personal and societal/cultural expressions. This journey will enable course participants to gain a deeper appreciation of a more obscure artistic legacy that has been given to us over the millennia, and to develop the tools to understand art's more profound impact on our understanding of psi phenomena and, equally, the importance of the creative muses in the exploration of consciousness.
This eight week academic course explores the phenomena and scientific evidence for energy healing and psychokinesis. Some theories present these as different expressions of the same phenomena. This proposal will be explored in this course.
Energy healing encompasses many techniques including laying on hands, reiki, qigong, healing touch, esoteric healing, and many, many more. Research on healing includes an observation of the phenomena and measurements of the effectiveness of these techniques on people, animals, plants and other organic matter. What does the scientific evidence indicate related to energy healing?
Psychokinesis, PK, or Mind-Matter-Interaction all describe the same phenomena. Can people affect physical objects with only their thoughts or intentions? This course will explore examples of macro and micro psychokinesis and discuss the scientific research that has been done to understand how these phenomena might work and what psychological factors might cause people to demonstrate PK.
This course is included in the a number of certificate programs.
This eight week course will be broadcast live on Wednesday evenings, but many students choose to watch the recordings of the classes if they cannot attend them live.
This course will cover topics related to Altered States of Consciousness (ASC) and will especially focus on the nature of dreams. Lucid Dreaming, Sleep Paralysis, Shared Dreaming, and Dream Symbols will be discuss. In addition, other altered states will be explored including the hypnotic state, drug induced states, meditation, and other altered states.
This 4-week course will focus on the technology used to examine paranormal phenomena. We will explore Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP), Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC), and other technology that is often used in the investigation of paranormal phenomena.
Instructor Loyd Auerbach is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable experts on the paranormal. His courses are always well attended and some of the most exciting courses offered at the Rhine Education Center.

This introductory course is focused on the connections between psychology and psi. We will look into some historical perspectives on psi and how different cultural norms influenced how psi events were understood around the world. The course will include an exploration how psychologists from the past viewed psi activity, dreams, altered states of consciousness, and how factors such as belief and anxiety can impact the expression of psi.
Alternative cognitive styles will be discussed as well as unconscious psi events and how our state of mind can sabotage the free expression of psi. Finally, we will broadly explore the nature of consciousness and some psychological theories that incorporate psi into our view of the world.
THIS IS NOT A COURSE ABOUT COUNSELLING. Though counselling is very important for those who are having psi experiences, this course is designed for those who want to apply psychological concepts in their understanding of psi events and in research environments.
This course is included in the a number of certificate programs.
This is a Seminar course that will involve live student interaction and discussions. Limited enrollment. How do native cultures view psi phenomena?
How do culture-based beliefs and folklore around healing and psychokinesis differ between places like China, Mexico, and the Australian Outback? Why are seers and clairvoyants accepted in some cultures but shunned by others, modern culture included? How are culture-bound/religion-bound magic, witchcraft, and sorcery beliefs related to psychic abilities and experiences?
This 8-week academic course will be a high-level overview of the ideas and beliefs of psychic experiences, the human mind and spirit, and related areas (life after death, reincarnation, etc.) as those beliefs have been “seen” by anthropologists and parapsychologists around the world. We will look at the possible instances of psi phenomena best reported in studies of divination, witchcraft and sorcery beliefs and practices, various cross-cultural studies, modern beliefs in the occult and supernatural, and the application of psychic functioning in archaeology and anthropology. From the parapsychological side, we will examine the ways culture affects belief, which in turn affects the psychic experience.
The research findings from the field of Parapsychology have demonstrated that psi abilities-- ESP and PK (psychokinesis / mind over matter) – are functions of normal human beings, much like creativity. Some people are more creative than others in different disciplines, but everyone seems to have some creativity in them, provided they can find it and have some belief it can be developed and utilized.
Developing one's psychic/intuitive abilities is much the same. Some people have a natural aptitude for certain psychic talents that spontaneously manifest themselves, others need to find which applications of psi they have aptitude for and work on bringing them out. This course will cover the major findings of Parapsychology relating to what makes a person more (or less) intuitive/psychic and will include exercises that will help you both test and develop the abilities you may have aptitude for, including a remote viewing experiment and a "Telepathy" game you can play with your family and friends.

Christianity is the world’s largest religion. Approximately one third of the global population identifies as Christian, and it had an influential role in the development of parapsychology. Yet many have the impression that Christianity and parapsychology are incompatible and that all psychic phenomena are demonic deceptions. Even many Christians have the impression that “it’s always demons.” However, the scope of Christian thought is actually broader, and historic Christian thinkers have been open to psi phenomenon.
This course surveys the scope of Christian thought on parapsychological topics including extra-sensory perception (ESP), psychokinesis (PK), the survival of bodily death, and Church-sponsored field investigations of paranormal phenomena like apparitions, miracles, and spirit possession.

This 4 week continuing education course will examine the phenomenon of Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs) and offer insights into how you can begin your own journeys to travel out of your body. OBE specialist and author Graham Nicholls will explore the history of OBEs, their relationship with near and shared death experiences, veridical OBEs, OBE science, and his own research into the nature of the experience. The course will provide an in-depth discussion of personal experiences and what these experiences suggest about the nature of out-of-body perception and the continuation of consciousness after death.
Theories of nonlocal consciousness and network theory will be included as well as the work of scientists such as Brian Josephson, Rupert Sheldrake, and Sir Roger Penrose.
This course is required for a number of certificate program, and can be applied to other certificates.
This 6-week course provides a discussion of the ethical issues that can arise in psi research and field investigations and introduces practices to ensure ethical considerations are being addressed. Topics will include the basic foundation of ethics including an introduction to Institutional Review Boards and the ethical guidelines used by professional researchers. In addition, examples will be provided from real-life investigations and situations that are often encountered by field investigators.
Besides paranormal investigations, investigations also include exploring reincarnation, and practices related to mediumship and after-death communications.
This course is included in the Expressing Conscious Living certificate program.
What types of experiences do people report? Who reports them? What are some of the theories behind some of these experiences? How are these experiences evaluated and investigated?
This 4 week course will provide overview of the full range and depths of exceptional experiences, also known as anomalous events, including experiences of hallucinations, lucid and precognitive dreams, near-death and out-of body events, UFO sightings, alien abductions, psychokinesis, remote viewing, mysticism, anomalous healing, psi-events and past-lives.
Experiencing the Exceptional and Extraordinary will evaluate whether there are underlying similarities among all the phenomena and the issues with moving forward with a new scientific paradigm.
How do religions integrate psi phenomena into their belief systems?
Religion is one of the most common and profound aspects of human life. It often deals with experiences that are considered extraordinary or outside the normal operation of nature. Historically, these have been called supernatural experiences, but today they might be called paranormal.
Parapsychologists take a scientific approach to the phenomena and experiences that are sometimes reported in religious contexts. This course will explore parapsychology from the viewpoint of different world religions. It will survey key parapsychological topics and how they are understood by some of the major world religions (including indigenous religions, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam).
It is important to note that this course will be presented from a religiously neutral point of view. That is, it will focus on the phenomena and perspectives, but it will not presuppose the truth or falsity of any religious beliefs.
This course can be applied as an elective for many certificate programs
Movies and TV shows like the Exorcist, Ghost, Stranger Things, The OA, and the X-Files all represent psychic phenomena and the paranormal with great insight and often engaging stories. Of course, many of the events in these shows are completely fictional, but some of the stories actually reflect real events or results that have been observed by parapsychologists! On the other hand, paranormal reality shows claim to present events and phenomena truthfully, but actually reflect a “reality” created by uninformed television producers.
This fun course will explore movies, TV (fictional and reality), and literature and separate the truth from fiction. It will explore how popular culture is influenced by psi experiences, beliefs, and misconceptions about the phenomena. More importantly, it will explore how media representations of psi influence the public's beliefs in and about psi, even to the point of affecting how people experience psi events when they happen.
This course can be applied to many certificate programs
This 4 week course will explore some of the important people who helped to build the field of parapsychology and who made major breakthroughs that revolutionized the sciences. This course focuses on the people, their lives and their contributions, to give depth to our understanding of the evolution of parapsychology from the 19th century through modern times.
This course will include some of the original psychical researchers, the early years of parapsychology in academic environments, major contributors through the mid to late 20th century, and some more recent researchers who have made thier marks on the field.
The focus of this course will be the people of parapsychology, but the list of people who are included may change each time it is taught based on the preferences of the instructor.
